We have been very lucky in our lives but also like many others we have had to work hard to support both the mortgage and the daughter through University. Finally, the grey, grey, grey weather of a few winters ago got on top of us and we made our decision that we would spend our twilight years (at least the winter months) somewhere warm and sunny.

We soon forgot that dream as other priorities took their place in our lives. However, about 4 years ago we then decided to go on holiday to Spain and booked some self catering accommodation on the Costa Blanca for a fairly cheap short break with our daughter and her friend. We stayed near Torrevieja - we didn't like it very much, but it had lots of good beaches nearby and plenty of places to eat so we had a good holiday. Our accommodation was not so good, so on our return, we made a complaint and to our surprise the very accommodating owner apologised for the state of the place and offered us a free week which we accepted.

The following May we took our friends with us and we had a fantastic time. We went to the market in Guardamar one very sunny Wednesday and that is where we met the agent who was to introduce us to Roda Golf. He whizzed us down the coast the very next day and we went off to visit a field with a portakabin at Los Alcazares on the Mar Menor. In that portakabin was the sales office for Roda Golf & Beach Resort and, yes you have guessed correctly! Some 2 and half years later we have just completed and now own a wonderful 2 double bedroom, 2 bathroom luxury apartment overlooking the pool on that Resort. The flat field was transformed by Calidona over the period and now DeVere manage the renowned PGA endorsed Golf Course and will manage the Beach Club when it is converted this Summer (located in a fantastic 70's villa at the end of the La Manga Strip and accessed by water transport from the resort) as well as the 5 star hotel which will be built on the site. To say it is fabulous is an understatement. This place, only 10 minutes or so from San Javier (Murcia) airport and 45 minutes from Los Alcazares is great - the weather is warm and sunny, the food fantastic and the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor only minutes away. We are very lucky.

I have to say that I looked around for a firm to handle the stage payments for this purchase and Escape Currency came up trumps. They have been nothing but efficient and obliging, even if I did forget to give the instruction to transfer the Euros we had bought and a quick panic phone call from me to Henry Harman when we completed ensured the money was on its way. I think it is great that we have a good direct relationship with our currency broker as this has enabled us to get our money transferred economically and efficiently at an exceptionally good rate.

Spain is a lovely country and I am sure that we will continue to use the services of Escape to transfer funds as and when we need them in the future. We have got our "Place in the Sun" where we can go and chill out and laze by the pool and at the moment we have no regrets. Murcia is a wonderful area full of history and Spanish magic and I am sure that will be very, very happy spending our winter twilight years there. However, in the meantime, we will also be offering it for rental but we will are also going to have some fantastic holidays with family and friends at Roda Golf & Beach Resort.
